DOWNTOWN TOPEKA OPTIMIST CLUB -CHILI SUPPER

Preparing for the Chili Dinner
January 15th found the Topeka Downtown Optimist Club busy hustling chili, and cinnamon roles to a large crowd. The added in a silent auction, and bake sale, and finished up selling the remaining nuts from their prior fundraiser. A good evening on a foggy night. Now, they can rest a little and get ready for their Pancake Breakfast March 20.  Mark you calendars and plan to venture to Topeka for a tasty breakfast. - More later!

                 Growth Conference

In early December, Governor Obermeier, Immediate Past Governor Ingle, Assist. Governor, Drbal & Nora, and Clara Herbel and Ruth Nelson attended a growth conference in Dallas with International President Mark Shriver, International President-Elect Danny Rogers, International Vice President Finn, International Vice President Elect - Ron Graves and members of the Soutwest Region. We had a "non-conference, conference" and we'll be using a version of it at the February District Conference - so come prepared with some questions that you would like to have answered!
We all know that growth includes building new clubs, and it is always a topic for discussion, sometimes to the point of ad-nausieum! But the truth is, if we want to continue to survive and provide services for children, then we must grow. Individually each club must grow, and as a District we must grow with new clubs and like businesses groups tend to cycle up and down. The way to move up, is to reinvent yourselves by assessing what you are doing, what you can do better, what you can do different, and what you no longer need to do. The beauty of individual clubs is that you can participate in International Programs ..or not, and you have full control of how you can best serve your community and the cheldren. Maye 2010 a year when you will review your programs, get advice from others as to what needs might have been changed, and what you might be able to do better.  It will reinvigorate you and will help you to get new members.
We have always had the Personal Growth and Involvement program ....by the way, it's been suggested that that name change to Personal Growth Incentives to attract the young business man and encourage them to go through the modules to help them in theiri personal and professional life.
President Shriver and President-Elect Rogers are working to have a seamless transition, as well as being on the same page addressing concerns of membership. They, are "user friendly" leaders!

OLATHE'S SECOND CHANCE JOOI CLUB DELIVERS BIKES

2nd Chance JOOI presents bikes for Christmas With the start of their 2nd year, Olathe's Second Chance JOOI Club has refurbished and delivered thier first four bikes, just in time for Christmas, for a needy child. On December 2nd President Olivas and Treasurer Orduna along with sponsors Erik Erazo and Adrianna Braswell and Indian Trail Junior High Principal, Becky Verbas delivered four refurbished bikes to the Center of Grace in Olathe. Pastor Sylvia Romero accepted the bikes and said that they would see that four children received them at Christmas time. Thanks to many local citizens, the students have received a number of bikes to work on and will make their second distribution sometime after the first of the year.  They sold Nachos at two Football games to help fund these projects, and hope to sell Donuts at school sometime after they return to school after the first of the year, to continue to pay for the parts needed to repare the bikes.
This club made up of Hispanic boys has found a niche at school, and teachers and administrators have seen a difference in their grades and attitude, so it's been a win win for all.
Plans are in the works to raffle off one of the bikes for Haiti relief. They also plan to sell donuts to raise funds for supplies to continue repairing bikes.

 KANSAS DISTRICT
TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

This year, in August, we will mark the 50th year for the Kansas District.
We hope to mark this date with a celebration, so if you have any ideas about how we might want to celebrate and commerate this time, please contact Ruth Nelson at rnelson1021@sbcglobal.net.
We'll have a committee working on details, but suggestions and ideas would be very much appreciated.

PRATT OPTIMIST CLUB NOTES

President Stofer e-mailed that all is well with the Pratt Optimist Club. They are welcoming three new members, completed their Annual Pancake Feed - for over 300 folks, and have distributed 38 bikes to some very happy children.  - Good to hear from our folks out west!

CHILDHOOD CANCER CAMPAIGN 2009-10

All clubs should have, or be receiving their "Brown Bag" to fill for Camp Quality Kansas. This year, 35 children are anticipated at camp, which will be the last week of July. These supplys are great for the kids, and help defray costs to provide a week of camp.  Please plan to turn your bags in at the February, or April conference (or send them with your Lt. Governor).
Remember, children have birthdays during camp, or there might be other occasions when a small gift is appropriate, so you might want to add that to your list of items - all donations are appreciated, and don't forget...if you are close to Camp Hope, they'd appreciate your Brown Bag donations too!

PAST GOVERNORS

We would like to begin a tradition of recognizing our Past Governors with a Christian D. Larson award annually. The past governor's themselves have begun to make a contribution for this purpose, but we need individual and club assistance. If you would like to make a donation, to recognize one of our governor's in August, please send your check, made out to the Optimist International Foundation (and in the Memo section note CDL-Kansas and send it to Ruth Nelson, 15572 S. Blackfoot St., Olathe, KS. 66062. This award will be made in August 2010 at the Past Governor's Dinner. The recipient to be selected by a committee and hopefully, this will be come a Kansas District Tradition. If you have questions, please contact me at rnelson1021@sbcglobal.net
